FTT: Regrets, Social Media & Cliffs

FTT: Regrets, Social Media & Cliffs

Happy Free Thoughts Thursday, people.

Another week almost gone. Let's enjoy what's left.

Yesterday’s Video:

Slowly improving my production quality. Having fun with it.

3 Things I’ve Learned:

  1. Regret is the second most common emotion people talk about (behind love) and there are four main types:

Boldnessif only I had taken the chance—things like wishing you had asked someone out on a date or that you had left your job and started your own business.

Foundationalif only I had done the work—things like wishing you had taken better care of your health or that you had saved more money when you were younger.

Moralif only I had done the right thing—things like picking on someone in school or being unfaithful to your partner.

Connectionif only I had reached out—things like losing touch with an old friend or growing apart from your family.

Regrets are inevitable. We can't avoid them.

We just have to choose which ones we want and which ones we don't.

2. Physiologically, emotions last around 90 seconds.

The chemicals associated with a particular emotion are active for less than a minute and a half before they're flushed out.

What keeps those chemicals (and therefore those emotions) active beyond those 90 seconds is our thoughts.

This means that we have control over how we feel after we experience an emotion. The key is to manage how we think.

3. The 90/9/1 Rule

On any social network or online community, 1% of the users generate 90% of the content, 9% of the users generate 10% of the content, and 90% generate basically none.

Something to keep in mind as we browse our favorite apps.

2 Questions for You:

  1. What is your biggest regret?
  2. What can that regret teach you?

1 Quote:

“When the whole world is running towards a cliff, he who is running in the opposite direction appears to have lost his mind.”—C. S. Lewis

I've been having trouble recently with all of the stories circulating in the news. Not necessarily because of the politics around it all, but because I feel like I should be doing more to help. My dad reminded me to focus on what's in front of me. On what I can do to make the world a better place. Sometimes I need those reminders to bring me back down to Earth.

What I can do is share the things I learn with others with the hope that they can benefit from the knowledge and use it to improve their own lives.

With Instagram, YouTube and now this newsletter, I'm starting small. But even if it only helps one person... that's a hell of a lot better than none.

Live your life to the fullest,

Chris
